ADAPT Delaware is working to help people get out of institutions, nursing homes and State Schools.

The Arc of Delaware is an organization of and for people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities and their families devoted to promoting and improving supports and services for people with mental retardation and their families.

Child, Inc. provides shelters, domestic violence treatment programs, specialized foster care, prevention programs such as parenting classes and assistance, and community advocacy for children and their families.

Children & Families First counselors, licensed clinical social workers, parent educators, outreach workers and medical personnel work to strengthen families and communities.

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in Delaware is a statewide organization of families, mental health consumers, friends, and professionals dedicated to improving the quality of life for those affected by life-changing brain diseases such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is dedicated to ending the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis through the delivery of programs and services to people with MS and their families and support of research into the cause and cure of MS.

New Directions Delaware, Inc. is a support group for people with depression and manic depression and for their families and friends.

The Parent Information Center of Delaware trains and informs parents and professionals, helps families obtain appropriate education and services for their children with disabilities, works to improve educational results for all children, resolves problems between families and schools or other agencies, and connects children with disabilities to community resources that address their needs.

People First of Delaware is a self-advocacy group which meets each month to learn about issues affecting persons with disabilities and to work on those issues. Trips and other activities are scheduled throughout the year which help members grow socially and emotionally, learn to advocate for themselves, and to have fun.

Spina Bifida Association of Delaware promotes public awareness, helps aid in the prevention of spina bifida and attempts to enhance the lives of all persons affected.

Special Olympics Delaware provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people eight years of age and older with mental retardation.

No Child Left Behind Act of 2001

The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act (Perkins) was most recently reauthorized in August 2006. The purpose of Perkins is to provide individuals with the academic and technical skills needed to succeed in a knowledge- and skills-based economy. Perkins supports career and technical education that prepares its students both for postsecondary education and the careers of their choice.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation. IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education and related services to more than 6.5 million eligible infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities.

Special Needs Program (formerly: Exceptional Family Member Program, Family Support Center )
Assists military members who have family members requiring exceptional medical or special educational services. A mandatory enrollment/identification program for active duty personnel who have family members with exceptional medical, psychological, developmental, or educational needs. Program assists in assigning an active duty member to an area where his/her exceptional family member's special needs can be met.

The Academic Enrichment Center (AEC), a unit of the Office of Undergraduate Studies, assists the University of Delaware with the retention of students through its collection of academic support programs, services and activities. In many cases, the AEC coordinates its efforts with other University offices to insure a comprehensive set of services.
